The High Tech High (HTH) network of schools is infamous throughout Southern California for its high-quality, high-tech curricula. We were proud to join their science teacher cohort meeting today to let fellow educators know about all of our resources for STEM education. There was a lot of interest among HTH teachers, who envision their students tackling applied nanotechnology projects for the benefit of their communities. With outreach to the HTH network in San Diego, Omni Nano aims to strengthen the pipeline of students entering UCSD’s Nanoengineering program.

It was a honor to speak for the fifth year in a row at today’s annual conference of the NanoBusiness Commericialization Association (NanoBCA). Being the only nonprofit organization with nanotechnology educational programs for high school and community college audiences, it is important for Omni Nano to regularly share the progress of our digital courses and online curriculum with the nanotechnology community.

The US is falling behind on the world stage when it comes to STEM education and innovation. Modern digital STEM courses, such as those created and offered by Omni Nano, are helping new kids discover the fascinating world of science and engineering.

NanoBCA is the only national nonprofit devoted to the advocacy and advancement of research and innovation in nanotechnology. As always, the 17th Annual NanoBCA Conference provided executives and professionals from around the country the opportunity to personally update and network with their peers in the nanotechnology community, including representatives from academia, research, government, and various nanotechnology-related industries.

The day was packed with a full agenda:

NanoBCA’s Executive Director, Vincent Caprio, provided the opening remarks alongside host firm K&L Gates Partner, Paul Stimers.

Dr. Arpana Verma, Chief Science Officer of NanoMech, spoke about the “Supercycle of Innovation and Commercialization.”

Dr. Samuel Brauer, Principal of Nanotech Plus, gave a talk discussing “Nanotechnology in Medicine: How Much Progress?”

Dr. Matthew Putman, CEO of Nanotronics Imaging, talked about “Moving toward Abundance through Molecular Nanotechnology.”

Jim Alwood, Program Manager of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics’ Chemical Control Division, updated the nanotechnology community about “TSCA New Chemical Activities and Reporting Rule for Nanoscale Materials.”

After Lynn L. Bergeson, Managing Director of Bergeson & Campbell, provided the “2018 EHS Regulatory Overview: Key Domestic and International Developments,” she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from NanoBCA in recognition for her dedicated service and diligent work for the community. Congratulations, Lynn!

Dr. Ajay P. Malshe, Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arkansas, gave a presentation entitled “Beyond the Bounds” regarding hot topics in the future of science. Dr. Malshe was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from NanoBCA for his rich history of nanotechnology innovations. Congratulations!

Dr. Carleton J.C. Hsia, Founder and CEO of AntiRadical Therapeutics, talked about “One Belt and One Road Initiative: Impact of Huangdi Neijing and Nano Quantum Medicine.”

Jim Hurd, Director of GreenScience Exchange, updated the community about “Nanotechnology Investing: State of the Union 2018.”

Penelope T. Salmons, President and COO of Fibrtec, shared her company’s “Roadmap for Scaling up and Commercialization.”

Dr. Matthew Hull, Associate Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at NanoEarth as well as President and Founder of NanoSafe, discussed “Patents, Predictions, and Pivots: The Possibilities and Peril of Nanotechnology Entrepreneurship.”

Dr. Anis Rahman, President and CTO of Applied Research & Photonics, gave a talk about “Nanometrology Horizon: Emergence of Terahertz Nano-imaging via Overcoming the Wavelength Barrier.”

Finally, a representative from the FBI provided insights from the Bureau’s Economic Espionage Program, which works to prevent innovative companies such as those in the nanotech industry from threats to their valuable intellectual property.

The annual Digital Media Educators Conference (DMEC) brings together community college professors from all over California on a common mission to add the latest developed tools to their teaching toolboxes.

The DMEC highlights the importance of moving toward digital learning platforms to keep up with current and future demand. By 2025, the world’s population will increase by 500 million – and the number of people with mobile internet access will increase by 1 billion. Many of these late adopters will be seeking a high-quality online education. After all, top futurist Thomas Frey predicted that an online school will be the largest internet company by 2030.

Omni Nano’s fully digital nanotechnology curriculum is already available and we can’t wait to provide the next billion learners with the opportunity to get an affordable, high-quality nanotechnology education online.

At this year’s conference, we gave a popular presentation outlining the blueprint for creating such digital curricula that can be easily adopted into standard, online, and hybrid classrooms. By fully digitizing curricula, they can be made widely available on most online learning platforms – and can be translated into virtually any language in a matter of hours. We are proud to have inspired attendees from both academia and industry with our talk, and we enjoyed learning from all of the other presenters.

For the second year in a row, Omni Nano has been sponsored to participate in the High Impact Technology Exchange Conference (HI-TEC). This NSF-sponsored national conference on advanced technological education invites secondary and post-secondary educators, counselors, industry professionals, trade organizations, and technicians to update their knowledge and skills.

Title:  Digital Curricula for Online and Hybrid Nanotechnology Courses

Impact:  Introducing youth to nanotechnology and STEM inspires and prepares them for their professional careers in the globalized, high-tech economy of the 21st century.

Abstract:  Omni Nano, a non-profit organization devoted to nanotechnology education, has created the first and only complete digital curricula for online/hybrid high school and undergraduate nanotechnology courses. Our student-centered, teacher-approved materials include everything required to teach nanotechnology, whether as a stand-alone class or integrated into another science class, including lesson plans, presentations, assignments and answer keys, and hands-on laboratory activities. Their modular structure gives schools and teachers the flexibility to add and edit content to fit their schedule. Compatibility with popular learning management systems like Blackboard and Canvas make the adoption and use of our NGSS-aligned curricula simple and straightforward.

Omni Nano got some great news in our inbox today! For the fifth year in a row, we have been invited to participate in the NanoBusiness Commercialization Association (NanoBCA)’s Annual Conference. And we’re thrilled to catch up with the many NanoBCA community members who have supported Omni Nano throughout the years.

Title:  Creating the Digital Curriculum for Nanotechnology

Abstract:  Omni Nano is developing digital curricula for the classrooms of the 21st century, to be used in traditional classrooms or virtual learning environments. Our initial courses focus on Nanotechnology, a new and upcoming field of science and engineering. Our educational materials implement innovative teaching methods such as the flipped classroom model, where students can increase their learning potential through project-based learning and group activities. The mix of interactive and multimedia content with applications to real-world problems gives every student something to connect with and be inspired by. Our digital curriculum is accessible through popular Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Canvas, and in February 2018, we launched a MOOC (massive open online course) to serve students all around the world. The 16th Annual Conference of the NanoBusiness Commercialization Association Conference (NanoBCA) just took place (June 15, 2017) at the law firm K&L Gates in Washington, DC.

Dr. Marco Curreli, Executive Director of Omni Nano and Director of Nanotechnology Research at Gamma Alloys, moderated the entire event and updated the nanotech business community on the latest developments in the areas of nanotechnology education and reinforced aluminum alloys.

Dr. Curreli commented:

This year, the nanotechnology community met in New York City for the Annual Conference of the NanoBusiness Commercialization Association (NanoBCA) at Akerman LLP.
